Hello Parents,
As the new year begins, we are tweaking our spelling assignments each week to continue to meet the students' needs in the best way possible. Moving forward, word lists will reflect a specific letter sound or spelling rule. This will help students have a meaningful focus each week and encourage the transfer of knowledge from spelling lists to weekly reading and writing tasks.
In the coming weeks, students in the red group will work on identifying, sorting, and sounding out words beginning with various letters to build their letter-sound knowledge. This week, their letters will be B, M, R, S. Please take some time to look for items around the house that begin with these letters, and encourage your child to write down the initial letter sound, and any other sounds they may hear in the word.
The rest of the students will be focusing on short and long a sounds in words this week:
Blue group: skate, crab, map, bat, frame, shave, hat, rain
Green group: day, nail, stay, grain, trade, glass, raise, brave
Yellow group: day, nail, stay, grain, trade, glass, raise, brave, plus 4 words of their choice. Each chosen word will reflect one spelling rule of short a or long a sounds. We will introduce these specific rules on Tuesday, so please don't be worried if your child cannot explain the rules yet.
