BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY - Tuesday June 4th

Image result for child on bike cartoon

Dear Families,

We are excited that CJP will be participating on Bike to School Day on Tuesday June 4th. Students are invited to participate by biking from home to school or driving closer to school and biking the rest of the distance. Bike to School Day helps students become active and engaged with the outdoors. CJP has participated in this project for a few years, to encourage students to build a healthy lifestyle while having fun! More information can be found at: http://calgarybiketoschool.weebly.com/

If your child is choosing to participate please ensure their bike and helmet is clearly labeled with their first name, last name and room number. Students will be storing their helmets inside their classrooms.
Please do not bring your bike in through the front doors. There will be two outdoor doors connected to the gym for students to drop their bikes off. Grades K-3 will enter through the west door (door closest to staff parking lot) with their bikes. Please be courteous to staff by not parking in the staff parking lot. The other entrance for grade 4-6 will be the the door closest to the front entrance of the school facing Northmount drive. Both doors will be marked with a sign and pylon. The students will enter the door and drop their bikes off inside the gym by their designated classroom spot marked with a number. Please note which door your child takes their bike in, they will be exiting through this door at the end of the day to meet you outside. Due to the volume of people participating, students are asked to independently bring their bike in and out of the gym. Teachers and volunteers will be assisting students in parking and retrieving their bikes.
We are looking for CBE approved parent volunteers to help usher the students into the doors, help park their bikes and cheer them on! If you are able to volunteer in the morning from 8:45am-9:20am and/or 3:45pm-4pm please email
chwross@cbe.ab.ca

Thank you,
CJP Bike to School committee

Plenty of Patterns Spirit Day - May 23

This Thursday, May 23rd is our next Spirit Day: Plenty of Patterns Day! Students are encouraged to dress in A LOT of different patterns and designs. For example: a student might wear a plaid shirt, with polka-dot pants and floral socks. Or perhaps they have a checkered skirt, striped tights, and an animal print sweater. The more miss-matched and different the better!

This week at school...

To Parents and Guardians:

This week at school...

- We practiced our assembly song and worked on a secret project that we can't wait to share with you! We hope you can join us at our assembly on May 29 @ 1:30pm!
- We played soccer games and practiced our dribbling, passing, and kicking skills.
- We finished our First Nations inspired art by adding a pattern to the border.
- Classes researched about prairie animals including bison, moose, gophers, antelope and prairie dogs!
- In Math, grade one students worked on open-ended problems. These problems have more than one answer! Grade two students practiced a new game called Building Bridges and another game called Monster Mansion.
- In the Learning Commons, most of us finished our boats and took a video or picture.
- We started a new Science unit about Small Crawling and Flying animals! Did you know insects and arachnids are invertebrates?! That means they have no backbones.

On Thursday, May 30 we are going to Bowness Park! We still need 3-4 volunteers to join us.

Have an EPIC long weekend!

Love,
Room 6 and Room 13

Water Walk Reflections

Students in Rooms 6 & 13 participated in our Water Walk today by carrying our backpacks on our heads to remind us of those who have to walk to get their water.   It was harder than we thought!
Here are our thoughts about our Water Walk today:

It was tiring, but it was worth it because people in different countries have to walk to get water, and not even clean water.
I was thinking about water when I was walking.
Water is what we need to drink.
Water helps us live.  If we don't drink water, then we can die.
It was windy and the backpacks kept on getting off my head in the wind.
If you want to stay healthy you should drink a lot of water each day.
I respect our water walk for the people who are on the other side of world.
We used our energy for the other people who have to walk for water.
It was extremely hard. It was kind of like in India because in India the mothers had to carry jugs of water on their heads.
It really inspired me to think about the people who don't have water.
I am grateful because we have water.  The other people who don't have water are probably sad because they don't have enough water.
I was thinking, while I was walking, about how hard it would be for other people to walk to get their water.
I am grateful that we can just turn a tap and water comes out.
I am sad because they don't have clean water and they can get sick and die.
When I was walking, I was thinking of the people who had to walk there and walk to get dirty water.
It makes me sad that other people have to walk for water and they can't just go to a tap.
I am sad, because if people don't have taps they have to walk there.

Prairie Animal Art

As part of our study of Saskatoon, students have been learning about prairie animals. This week we did First Nations inspired art of the prairie animals we are studying. Students drew and cut a simple background shape of the animal, then added smaller shapes to add detail and texture. Next week we will finish up by adding a patterned border to match the colours used in the rest of the piece - stay tuned for more photos of our finished artwork!

REMINDER FOR TOMORROW - Water Walk

JUST A REMINDER for tomorrow....

WE Walk For Water
We are asking everyone at CJP to bring a loonie or a toonie for donations for the We Walk for Water campaign. Just $25 will allow one individual to be able to access clean water for life. Everyone deserves access to clean water, but not everyone can afford it.

The Water Walk will take place on Friday May 10th on the outside field rain or shine.  Instead of using actual jugs of water or pebbles, students will bring their backpacks outside.  Students will hold their backpack over their head and walk around the field to complete laps. This symbolizes the long walk to water that many young children face in other countries.

A Visit from Constable Rich

Today students in Rooms 6 and 13 were lucky to spend some time hearing from Constable Rich about his job as a police officer and ways to be safe in the community. Students had a lot of really important questions that he was able to answer, and it was great to hear how many students have had these sorts of discussions at home!

Constable Rich shared that above all, his most important tool is his words. Students were surprised to learn that Constable Rich has never used his gun on baton in his 16 years as an officer! He told us that he uses kind words to help people and keep them safe, even if the person he is talking to is a "bad guy".

Constable Rich also shared some very important tips about how students can be safe. Please take some time to discuss these ideas with your child at home:

- It is very important to always let an adult know where you are.
- If you walk home, always go straight home. Don't stop to play or go to a friend's house without telling an adult.
- Always have a plan. If someone is late picking you up or no one is at your bus stop when you are dropped off, you need to know what to do. Parents and children need to have these important conversations!
- Only go home with adults that parents have told you to go with. It is very important that your child knows who is allowed to pick them up from school - sometimes people they recognize are not safe to go with, so this should be clearly established by parents.
- Always look both ways when you are crossing the street, even when you are in the middle of the road. You never know if the cars are giving as much attention to the road as they should be!
- Know your phone number and address. Very few students shared that they know this information.

We are so grateful Constable Rich took time out of his day to share these important ideas with our students. What a great experience!

This week at school, scholastic orders, and other updates!

Hello Parents and Guardians!

A few updates and information:

1) This week at school writing: Today students are bringing home their TWAS book. Attached to today's writing there is a rubric for June writing expectations. Please take some time to read today's entry with your child and discuss where he or she falls on the rubric. Teachers have already done this once with students one on one, so it should be familiar.
Students had up to 45 minutes to complete this writing activity, which is a typical amount of time for one writing activity in class. Please keep this in mind when you look at your child's writing.

2) Scholastic Book Orders: Due to low response, teachers will not be sending home flyers for May or June. If you would like flyers to look at, please send your child's teacher an email. We are happy to send flyers home to students and families that are interested!

3) Room 6 started prairie animal research this week. Mrs. Harvey challenged them to go home this weekend and learn one new fact about the animal they've chosen to research. Please support your child in looking up one or two new facts to share with the class on Monday!

4) Next week we will be participating in the Water Walk on Friday. Please see previous blog post for more information.

5) Music Monday is next week!! Our classes will be part of the afternoon performance in the gym. We will begin promptly at 1:45, so if you are planning to join us please come a bit early and bring a blanket to sit on. We hope to see you all there!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Thanks,
Mrs. Harvey & Ms. Betty

New Math game: Target Number

Target Number
Players: 2+
Materials: Paper and pencil for each player, one deck of cards OR dice
Counters, number lines, hundred chart, etc. can be used as needed to support child add or subtract.

Instructions:
1) As a duo (or group), decide on what your target number should be. Write this number at the top of your page and circle it so you know it is your goal.
2) Player one picks a card (or rolls the dice). Whatever number is picked up or rolled is Player one's starting number. He or she writes it down. Repeat for each remaining player.
3) Player one picks a second card (or rolls the dice again). Player one adds or subtracts this number to his or her starting number. All other players repeat.
4) Players continue this circle of adding and subtracting numbers until one has hit the target! Players may go over the target number at any time, but no one wins until the target has been hit!

Extension: Use a deck of cards and assign value higher than 10 for Jack, Queen, and King (i.e. Jack = 11, Queen = 12, King = 13)

Example:

Please note students working with double digit numbers are encouraged to stack their numbers to add/subtract rather than write them in a line.

We Walk for Water: May 10

WE
 Walk For Water
Hello everyone! ME to WE is hosting the fundraiser; We Walk For Water on May 10th. This campaign is about raising money for those communities without fresh and clean water sources.  Some people have to walk miles to be able to get to a water source and some of these sources are contaminated. This causes many young children, majority of them being young girls, to be unable to attend school and get a proper education.

Some facts to inspire you to participate in the We Walk for Water fundraiser:
·      42% of health care facilities including hospitals and local clinics in Africa do not have access to a clean and non-contaminated water sources.
·      Nearly 900 children die per day due to diseases caused by contaminated water.
·      By 2050, 1 in 4 people will live where there is no fresh water
·      Young children are unable to have a good education due to them having to fetch water that isn’t even clean, so that their families can cook and have water.

Some questions to ask your children:

·      How would your routine change if you didn’t have any access to clean water?
·      How would you feel if you couldn’t go to school, and instead you had to go retrieve water for your family?
·      What are some ways you can help save water?
