Volunteer Information Forms

Please remember to return your volunteer information forms as soon as possible. These forms will allow our Room Parent to contact you with any volunteer opportunities that may arise. Remember, not all volunteering requires you to be physically at school! We will have lots of ways that parents can help from home too.

We appreciate your support!

School Dance Volunteers Needed

CJP's Annual Fall Family Dance is this Friday, November 2, 6:30 - 8:30pm. There will be dancing, a bake sale, 50/50 raffle, photo booth, quiet area, and new this year - pumpkin carving contest (vote for your favorite jack-o-lantern carved & decorated by each class)!

This is a fundraising event organized by the Parent Association. Last year it brought in over $1,000 that was used for things like the weekly math games sent home with students and supplies for teachers to organize their classrooms at the beginning of the school year.

The possibility of cancellation is a reality because the volunteer sign up is extremely low.

If you are free to help out, please click here to sign up!

Parent Conferences tomorrow

If you are having difficulties logging in to book a parent conference, please call the school tomorrow and we will find a slot for you.  Thanks for all your patience in navigating the new system!

Some parents have asked whether the students are to come to the conferences...
yes, we would like the students to come if this works for your family arrangements.  We look forward to talking with you about your child's growth at school!

Raz Kids Passwords for Room 13

Thanks to all the parents who have supported our students' reading program and have tried out Raz Kids.  Just to let you know that, now that most students have had some exposure to the program, I have reset passwords with their own personalized passwords (1 or 2 symbols) to protect their stars and incentives.

On Tuesday, students will come home with their new passwords glued into their folders.

I hope this has not cause any frustration with accessing the program.
I'm looking forward to seeing you all at interviews on Thursday.

Room 13 All About Me Presentations

Just a quick note that if your child was schedule to present today, we will be starting tomorrow morning with their presentations as our spelling studies took more than anticipated today....  Thanks for your understanding!  Ms. Betty

Communication Skills and Practice

We will be exploring presentation skills over the coming term.
Students will be practicing strategies to make their communication more effective.
Some things you can work on at home include the following:
-eye contact with the audience
-clear and audible speaking voice
-being prepared to speak about the information required for the assignment
-being prepared to answer questions about their presentations and their work

Students are encouraged to practice their presentations at home with these points in mind.
This will be something we will be working on throughout the school year.

Thanks for your support!

Photo Day Tomorrow! (Tuesday)

Reminder: Photo Day is Tuesday, October 16!

Raz Kids

Students in Rooms 6 and 13 will have the opportunity to participate in the Raz Kids reading program at school and at home. Using this program, the children can log in to the website and read texts at their own pace. Students will be required to complete a comprehension test before moving to the next reading level. Please keep in mind that the levels on Raz Kids do not always correspond to the system that we use at school. While we encourage you to be a part of your child's learning, the Raz Kids reading is intended to be an independent program. Your child should be able to participate independently. If your child finds their assigned level too difficult, please email your teacher and we will adjust.

You child's login information will be sent home this week, so please watch for this in communication folders!

Kids A-Z Login Instructions
Step 1: Go to www.kidsa-z.com
Step 2: Enter or choose the teacher's username
Step 3: Your child finds his or her username on the class chart
Step 4: Your child enters his or her password

In addition to Raz Kids, your child will participate in a home reading program, which will begin some time this week. Please watch for this information!

We Scare Hunger

WE SCARE HUNGER!

NO ONE SHOULD GO HUNGRY, BUT IN CANADA 1 in 7 CHILDREN GO TO SCHOOL HUNGRY.  36% OF FOOD BANK USERS IN CANADA ARE CHILDREN AND YOUTH!

THIS HALLOWEEN, BE HUNGER HEROES
Take action this Halloween to collect non-perishable food items at school and in your community to help stop hunger before it strikes.

Starting on Monday October 15th, the Me to We club will begin to collect non-perishable food items. We will continue to collect non-perishable food items until November 9th. All food items will be donated to the Calgary food bank to help hungry Calgarians.

Classroom Challenge: Which classroom can collect the most non-perishable items?
As teachers collect donated goods from students during October 15th to November 15th, they will tally the amount collected. The class to collect the most food items will have their class picture proudly displayed on the Me to We club’s Hall of Fame display case for everyone to see!

School Challenge: Can the school raise a total of 800 non-perishable food items?

Many food banks ask for the following non-perishable items:
o   Rice
o   Flour
o   Pasta
o   Canned fish and meat (Tuna, salmon, corned beef and chicken)
o   Stew and soup
o   Canned or dried beans
o   Canned fruit and vegetables
o   100% fruit juice
o   Canned or powdered milk
o   Cereals
o   Tomato sauce

ALL ABOUT ME PAGE

A paper copy will go home tomorrow for you to work on.
Here are the details:

Dear Families of Rooms 6 & 13,

We are starting our inquiry of Social Studies Outcome 1.1 “My Home, My School and My Community”.  In order to learn more about each other and foster an understanding for our similarities and differences, students will be presenting to the class during the week of October 15.

To prepare for this, we are asking families to record and bring the following information to present to the class:

1.     a family picture (returned at the end of the year)
2.   drawing of home
3.   the community name where you live and a list of any groups, clubs, sports or classes
4.   a flag of a country connected with your family
5.   Hello in your language spoken at home or a greeting connected with your family

Students will be sharing their ME BAG and then using the artifacts to make a poster to hang in our classroom.

Please return the attached paper by Monday, October 15 with a family picture so students are ready to start presenting next week.

Thanks so much for your support!

Ms. Lamboo & Ms. Betty

ROOM Parent Request

We need two parents for Room Parent positions for Rooms 6 and 13.
Your role is simple and will involve organizing volunteers for Field Trips and in the classroom as needed.  Room Parents do not need to be at the school in person as the responsibilities can be completed using email and the phone.

If you are interested, please email us and we will forward your name to the volunteer coordinator to give you further details.

Thank you for your support!  We couldn't do it without you!

Learning Commons

Learning Commons

This year, students in grade 1/2 and 3 will attend 2, 30-minute classes in the Learning Commons each week. During this time, students will engage in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) as they build communication and inquiry skills through problem-solving. In their first few STEM classes, students have learned about the variety of no technology, low technology and high technology experiences they will have when they come each week. Together, we brainstormed some of our favourite STEM activities.

Students are looking forward to:

-      robotics
-      makerspace
-      hands-on experiments
-      ipad and laptop use
-      coding
-      art
-      cross-curricular projects
-      math games

Please watch your classroom blog for updates.
