Glenbow Field Trip - What We Did

To Parents and Guardians of Room 6 and 13,

We are going to be talking about Inuit and the Discovery Adventure program that we explored yesterday.
First of all, in the morning Room 13 went to the Rocks and Minerals section.   We got to touch a rock.  If you touched it on the inside it was pointy and on the outside it was smooth!  It was called a geode and it was very unique.  We also went to a painting gallery and each looked at the pictures.  We were looking at what it would be like to be in the painting.

We went to the Christian Dior dress and fashion section.  There were many pretty designs there.  We found one that looked like a detective dress.  We were looking for 2D shapes and 3D objects.

Room 6 went to the Inuit program first and then we switched!  We learned all about animals in the Arctic and Inuit tools.  The Inuit people eat the blubber for vitamins because they have no fruits and vegetables.  They make kayaks out of seal skin. The Inuit have Women's Knives for cutting animals (seals, caribou, moose, fish) for food.  We found out that Inuit kids have toys too.  For example, we saw a stuffy duck.  We played a game where you have a bone and a stick and there is a string tied together with the bone.  You have to try to get the bone onto the stick by throwing up in the air.

Thank you to the volunteers who came with us.  We couldn't do it without you!
Thank you for reading this message.

Writing Goals

Families,

Students in Room 6 & 13 have set writing goals for after the break. We are working on getting the goals posted on Iris to share with you. If you have time over the break, check out the great work your child has already shared on Iris. If a new writing goal is not posted, it will be shortly after Spring Break.

After the break we will have these goals written for students to read every time we start a writing task. As goals are met, we will continue discussing how we can make our writing even better and new goals will be set.

Thank you for your continued support at home,

Ms. Betty & Mrs. Harvey

Reminder: Field Trip Tomorrow!

Parents & Guardians,

Students are very excited to go on our field trip to Glenbow Museum tomorrow! Please be reminded that we will leave promptly at 9:15am. Students will be bringing lunch bags and coats to the museum; everything else will remain at school.

Thank you,
Ms. Betty & Mrs. Harvey

Arctic Animal Research

This week students have been researching various Arctic animals. Did you know that a polar bear's skin is actually black? Or that penguins only live at the South Pole, not in the Arctic North?

Please take some time to ask your child about the animals he or she has been learning about. Many students are proud of the work they are doing and we have been so impressed by the interest and engagement we have seen!

Thanks,
Mrs. Harvey & Ms. Betty

Important Field Trip Information

Hello Parents & Guardians,

On Wednesday, March 20, Rooms 6 & 13 will be going to the Glenbow Museum. Please note the following important information:
1) Students will only be bringing their coats and lunch bags to the museum. No backpacks will be allowed. Please ensure your child has a lunch bag that can easily fit all of his or her lunch. If your child is bringing a water bottle it must also fit in, or be attached to, the lunch bag. Bags that can zip up are preferred.

2) We will be leaving the school promptly at 9:15am. Please plan to be at school on time as the bus will not wait for latecomers!

3) Please do not send money with your child as we will not be making stops at vending machines or the gift shop.

Thank you!

Mrs. Harvey & Ms. Betty

This Week in Room 6

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Today we had a special performance of Pinocchio by The Alberta Opera! We also wanted to finish an art project so we did not have time to write in our TWAS books today.

This week we were working on opinions and facts. An opinion is something you believe to be true and a fact is something that is proven to be true.

In Art, we made the Aurora Borealis (The Northern Lights) out of chalk pastels. We are learning about the north part of Canada called the Arctic. Ask me about the Inuit legend we read about the Northern Lights. This week we also researched Arctic animals. Some of the animals we researched are arctic foxes, polar bears, arctic hares, puffins, beluga whales and snowy owls.

Next week is our field trip to the Glenbow Museum. We will go on Wednesday morning. We look forward to learning more about Inuit culture!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Love,
Room 6 students

Room 13 Word Work

Please check your child's backpack for their word work book.
Some students did not finish writing out their sentences for their words this week.
They can use more than one word in a sentence but should use all their words.

Thanks,
Ms. Betty

FIELD TRIP forms and more information

Room 6 & 13 parents:

Please check in your child's backpack for field trip forms for our March 20 trip to the Glenbow.
Please sign and return the forms as soon as possible.
If you can volunteer, we are still looking for more volunteers.

Room 13 parents:

Please look for a strip of white paper with your child's winter writing goal on it.
We have all been working on these goals - each has their own individual one based on class performance - and have laminated strips on desktops to remind us as we work.
Students that demonstrate the skills necessary to complete their goal will be moved onto their "next steps" and they get to display their first goal on their clipboard in class.  Hopefully, by the time conferences roll around again, you will get to see their collection of writing accomplishments!

Grade 2 Math

Grade 2 students have been exploring a Math game called "Prodigy".
Passwords and login information came home today.
This will be an activity that students can go to when they have caught up on classwork.
Students can also play it at home if desired.
It is age appropriate for Grade 2 as there is quite a bit of reading involved, as well as Math.
The students are quite excited about it and would love to show you how it works.

GAMES PROJECT Grade 2s

This week, students are working on creating games and identifying 3D objects and 2D as they work with the supplies.  Please look at the link below for more details about the project - at the end of which you will find the rubric on how students will be evaluated.

Tomorrow we will be planning our games.  Would you please talk to your child and see if they will need any supplies from home, such as boxes or things from the recycling?  I've asked them to look for "treasures" from the recycling bin, rather than getting anything new.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks - Ms. Betty

Room 13 - Prairie Studies

Room 13 has been finishing their look into the Prairies.
This week we have been writing about which occupation is the best to have on the Prairies.
We have studied ranchers, farmers and oil workers.
Ask your child which one they think is the best occupation to have on the prairies.
They should be able to tell you facts and opinions about them.

To finish our Prairies study, we looked into the lives of the Indigenous people .  We started our own Tipi community.

Each of our designs has a symbol for the earth, the sky and a prairie animal.

Now, we are preparing to study the Arctic next week!
Today, our buddies helped us draw a snowy owl.  Here are some of them and a picture of an owl that was seen by Ms. Betty in this community!  We think it is very big.

We are looking forward to learning more about the animals, people, land and traditions of this cold place.

Can you tell what kind of owl this is?

Upcoming field trip - Date change

Hello Parents and Guardians,

In order to accommodate other classes from our school visiting the Glenbow Museum, we have swapped our field trip date to Wednesday, March 20.

Field trip forms will be sent home early next week.

Thank you for your understanding!

Mrs. Harvey & Ms. Betty

Spelling Words: March 04-15

For the rest of this week and into next week, students will be practicing the following spelling rules and begin applying them to their reading and writing:

Red group: 'at' family words (hat, bat, cat, sat, etc.) - this week
'an' family words (fan, man, can, etc.) - next week

Other groups: CVC short e, CVVC long e (ee) and long e (ea)

For example:
bell, elk, web (short e)
feet, cheese, green (long e, ee)
mean, speak, seal (long e ea)

You may notice your child has difficulty sounding out CVVC words while reading together. A helpful rule for students is "When two vowels go walking, the first vowel does the talking". This reminds students that in most cases the second vowel can be ignored because the first one takes over and makes a long sound. Of course, exceptions exist (think "bread"), and many words sound the same but look different (i.e. bean and been). In class we have been having discussions about how English is a tricky language and has a lot of words that break the rules. Sometimes all we can do to learn these things is practice!

Thank you for all you do at home to support your child's learning,
Ms. Betty & Mrs. Harvey

Grade 1 Math: Practicing Doubles

This week in math, the grade 1 students have been practicing their doubles addition facts: 1+1, 2+2, etc. These facts are the foundation of many addition strategies students will learn in years to come and students will be working towards memorizing them this year. Please also note that part of our curriculum is that students are able to do mental math up to 9+9 by June in preparation for grade 2.

Below is a game that we have been playing as a fun way to practice these facts. If you are looking for a way to support your child's learning of addition skills from now until the end of June, this game is an easy one to prep and play!

If you need a copy of the game and/or materials sent home with your child, please let me know.

Thanks for your support at home!
- Mrs. Harvey
