Orange Shirt Day – October 2

ORANGE SHIRT DAY - “Every Child Matters”

Join us on Tuesday October 2nd in recognizing Orange Shirt Day by wearing an orange shirt! Orange shirt day was started by Phyllis Webstad and based on her experiences and memories of residential school in Williams Lake, BC when her new orange shirt was taken away on her first day of school at the mission.
 The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year.  It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.  Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. “Every Child Matters”

Terry Fox Run Tomorrow (Thursday)

On Thursday, September 27, 2018, Captain John Palliser students, staff and families will join thousands of schools across Canada by participating in the Terry Fox Run.  Our classes are running at the following times:
Ms. Betty (Room 13): 9:30-10:05
Ms. Lamboo (Room 6): 2:00-2:35

We will run/walk rain or shine, so please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather!

To support Terry Fox’s dream and to raise money for cancer research, students are encouraged to donate a Toonie for Terry.  Cash donations can be brought into the school any day up to Tuesday October 2nd or you can choose to use our school’s online donation site http://www.terryfox.ca/CaptainJohnPalliserPlease click the “Sponsor Us” Link on this site.

We have two special fundraising challenges underway.   The first is called Fashion for Fox.  Any student who brings in a $10 donation will be able to bring an article of clothing (the crazier the better!) for their teacher to wear during the Terry Fox run.   In addition, for every $500 our school raises one teacher will get a pie in the face at a later assembly.

Parents are welcome to join us for our Terry Fox Run on Thursday, September 27 either as a runner/walker or to help place stamps on students hands to record the laps they complete.

Run Schedule:
9:30 –10:05 ~ Rooms 2, 3, 4am, 5am, 7, 8, 9, 13, 18, and 19

Room 13 Art coming home

Dear families of Room 13

Students have been learning about primary and secondary colors.  They have learned to mix colors and have worked on making colors lighter in a variety of activities.

Students will be bringing home their artwork showing 6 fish, representing 3 primary and 3 secondary colors.  Please take the time to discuss your child's art and put it up in a place where it can be talked about.  Ask your child to identify the primary and secondary color fish in their picture.  They should also be able to tell you how they made the water dark at the bottom of the page and lighter at the top.

Enjoy the fishies!  Warning.... some appear to have quite an array of teeth!  I think a few piranhas sneaked into some of the artwork....(!)

Grade 2 homework - Math

The grade 2's of Room 13 and 6 have some finish up homework to complete tonight - it should not take longer than 5 minutes as we have been working on this for several days.

Students have created an animal picture using blocks.
They have drawn it in their math books and have colored it.
Each color represents a number - each student has glued in a chart that has the following information:

Yellow =1
Tan = 2
Blue = 3
Red = 4
Green = 5
Orange = 6

Students were asked to list the numbers they used in their animal and add them up using counting on as we have been practicing in class.  The final step was to name their animal.

Tomorrow we are going to sort the animals using different criteria and explore some short cuts we can use when adding up numbers.  Please ensure the math books are returned to school tomorrow.  Thanks for your support.

Room 13 - Daily Message

Students of Room 13 are coming home with a special sentence in their Daily Message book.
It starts with "This week at school..." and students were asked to finish the sentence in class using some ideas that we thought of together about what we learned this week.

Some students did not finish this assignment.  Please check your child's message book and help them remember to complete this work.  If it is done, your child should read you their sentence.  Students can also add a picture, another sentence or color the drawing they have already done.

I look forward to seeing their sentences on Monday.
