Math Games

Over the last couple of weeks students have enjoyed playing new math games. Below are the rules to two of the games students have played. Captain only requires a regular deck of cards, but Kaboom!! requires some setup and preparation. Homemade flashcards can also be used in place of popsicle sticks if you do not have any on hand. The grade 1s have not yet learned Captain, and many of the grade 2s haven't played Kaboom!!, so these may be fun games for you to learn together over this long weekend!

If you would like to play these game at home but need the necessary materials sent home, please reach out to your child's teacher.

See you all on Monday!! :)

Scholastic Book Fair - more information

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at our school Tuesday February 26th to Wednesday February 27th. Students will be visiting the fair during class time; they will be allowed to purchase books during that time, but we also encourage you to look over the highlights flyer and the wish list they will bring home. Parents are welcome to visit anytime; remember to sign in at the office and pick up a visitor’s badge.

Please have your child fill out the ballot on the highlights flyer for a chance to win free books!

Did you know: 80% of the sales from this fair come back to the school in the library and home reading materials? Last year, our Scholastic book fairs brought in over $8500 worth of books for the library, home reading program, and English as a Learned Language support.

You may send cash or a cheque with your child to purchase their books. Cheques should be made out to CJP. Visa, Mastercard, and debit are also accepted when you visit the fair.

THE FAIR WILL BE OPEN THE FOLLOWING HOURS:

Tuesday February 26th 9:10am-4:50pm (opened after school)
Wednesday February 27th 9:10am-4:50pm (opened after school)
6:30pm-8:00pm (running along the Math Celebration of learning event)

CLOSED DURING RECESS AND LUNCH ALL DAYS

We still need volunteers; help us run a successful event! No experience needed, kids are welcome to come and help after school with their parent volunteers. A valid police clearance is needed for school hours volunteering. Please sign up at : http://signup.com/go/sTqTnUU

Upcoming Field Trip - Volunteers needed!

Hello Parents & Guardians,

On Thursday, March 21 we will be going to the Glenbow Museum for the day. We will leave the school at 9:15 and be back by around 2:45. If you are able to volunteer (and you have a police clearance to do so), please contact your room's Volunteer Coordinator. It would be amazing if we had 4-5 volunteers from each class to join us on this exciting field trip!

Thanks so much for your support!

Celebration of Learning - February 27

On Wednesday, February 27 from 6:15-7:45 we will be having a Celebration of Learning. There will be an opportunity for children to share some of what they have been learning about Robotics and Karate. There will also be some exciting math and literacy games for you to play with your child.

Classrooms will be open for you to come and go as you'd like, but if you would like to be a part of the Karate demonstration, please note the following times:

Grade 1s: students go to the music room (room 12) at 6:20; demonstration will begin in the gym at 6:30.

Grade 2s: students go to the music room at 6:50; demonstration in the gym at 7:00.

In addition to the activities above, parent council will be running a cafe on the stage for the evening. This will be a great place to stop by, purchase a few goodies, and watch the Karate demonstration.

See you all there!

Room 13 - Writing Homework

Some students in Room 13 need to finish their "HOW TO" instructional writing.
You will find their red writing folders in their backpacks with everything they need.
Most students just need to complete their title page (see attached photo).
Others are needing to finish their good copy writing as well.
Tomorrow we are moving on to another writing assignment, so please take some time tonight to ensure last week's writing is done.  We spent a lot of time today and last week in class on this assignment.

This Week in Room 6

Good Afternoon Parents and Guardians!

This week in Room 6...

- It was a blue dot week so we stayed inside a LOT!
- We did Karate in the gym.
- Grade 1s did 3D shapes in Math.
- Grade 2s did patterns in Math.
- We celebrated the 100th day of school! We bought 100 things to school and we sorted them. We sorted by biggest to smallest and we also did Venn diagrams.
- We did 100 Day writing using the prompts, "If I had $100, I would buy..." or "If I had 100 legs, I would..."
- For the 100th Day, we did a 100 pattern block challenge! Using 100 pattern blocks, we had to make a picture. It was very fun. Our creations are pictured below.
- We created heart envelopes to put Valentine's Day cards in.
- We started painting our classroom Canada map.
- In Science, we started to learn about the water cycle.

Happy Valentine's Day! Happy loooonnng weekend :)

Love,
Mrs. Harvey's students

100th Day of School: Tuesday, February 12

Tomorrow on Tuesday, February 12 it will be our 100th day of school! Students will participate in a variety of math and literacy activities to celebrate this exciting day.

If students would like, they are invited to bring in a collection of 100 items: 100 hair clips, 100 pieces of lego, 100 popcorn kernels, etc. If your child would like to bring in a collection, please ensure it can fit in a large freezer bag in your child's backpack.

Thank you!

Grade 2 Patterns - centers work coming home

Please look for the Patterns work that is coming home.
Below is the letter that came with it:

Monday, February 11, 2019

Dear Parents of Grade 2 students in Rooms 6 & 13,

We are currently in the middle of our pattern unit and have been exploring identifying patterns, extending pattern and filling in missing portions of patterns.  In the coming week we will be looking at increasing and decreasing patterns.

I am sending home some of the work done in class centers over the last week.  I am also sending home a mark sheet that shows your child’s performance based on the centers, observations and activities done so far in class.  For the most part, a “1” in center work indicated that the student may not have used class time well and did not complete the assigned activity.  You will see a lot of blanks on the attached sheets in this case.  Other students required more work on a given subject as they were completing the work, and continue to need support to solidify understanding of the concept.  You may want to work at home on these concepts.  If you would like some extra assignments to work on at home, please email me and I will send them your way.

Thanks for your support,

Ms. A. Betty

Look Alike Spirit Day - Friday, Feb 08

Tomorrow's Spirit Day is "Dress Alike Day". Students and staff are encouraged to dress like a friend(s). Students do not need to wear the exact same shirt or pants etc, but could dress in similar colours or styles. If your child does not have someone to dress similar to, they are invited to dress like a "CJP-er" by wearing red shirt and dark pants.

Looking forward to seeing all of the look-alikes tomorrow!

Room 13 LIQUIDS CHALLENGE - MONDAY

Students in Room 13 have spent the last few days exploring and describing the various qualities of liquids.
Some students have expressed an interest of exploring liquid examples they have at home.
IF YOU WISH, students may bring in a SAFE liquid in a small waterproof (!) tupperware container so that we can explore them together ON MONDAY.  Students need to be able to SMELL and FEEL the liquid safely, so please avoid products that contain or are made from nuts as well as products that contain a lot of chemicals!

PLEASE CLEARLY LABEL ALL CONTAINER WITH THE CONTENTS AND STUDENT'S NAME.

Ms. Betty will review all items submitted and assess them for safety before they are shared with the class.

Thanks!  We look forward to adding to our liquids chart.
So far we have explored water, syrup, glue and detergent.

Class Photos - Thursday, February 07

Parents and Guardians,

Please be reminded that on Thursday, February 07 we will be taking class photos. If your child would like to wear something special, please ensure he/she comes to school dressed in the outfit already.

Thank you!

Spelling Words - February 05

Red group: Words beginning with the letter C, H, F & D

Blue group: rock, smoke, toes, mop, road, nose, dot (short and long O sounds)

Green/Yellow groups: box, rode, road, chose, knock, boat, love, goat, soap
--> These are all short and long O sounds focusing on the rules CVC, as in 'box' (short O), CVCe, as in 'chose' (long O) and CVVC, as in 'road' (long O). Please note 'love' is an oddball word, meaning it does not follow the given rules.
Students in the yellow group will also choose 4 of their own words which follow the rules above.

Room 13 - Prairie Studies

As part of our study of Canada, students in Room 13 have been exploring what is like to be part of a prairie community.  Today we learned all about chinooks (perhaps inspired by the current weather!) and how the geography of Alberta creates these amazing breaks in our winters.

We learned a short song that students wanted to share with you.  Students should be able to say the words (or sing!) and show you the actions we decided on.  They also completed their own diagram about how the warm winds form from sea to mountain to Calgary.

Here it is:

Chinook Song

The sky is grey
The branches are bare
The fields are frozen under the snow.

We wait for the warm wind
Wait for the soft wind
Wait for the wind from the mountains to blow.

Polar Bear Club - if interested - please print, sign and return.

Polar Bear Club

When the weather dips to -20C (with or without the wind chill) or colder, students are not sent outside for recess. During those indoor recess days, we are offering the opportunity for students to go outside for a short time and play as part of our Polar Bear Club or choose to stay inside for lunch recess.

Rationale: Regular opportunities for play and physical activity, especially outdoors, improves our mood, attention and fitness.

Participation: The option to go outside will only be offered to those students who have returned a permission form signed by a parent or guardian and who are properly dressed. Students with a permission form may still choose to stay inside during indoor lunch recess.

Supervision: The Polar Bear Club will be supervised by Mrs. Holman, Ms. Yong, Ms. Hamel, Mrs. O’Grady, and Mrs. Naud

If your child is interested in having the option to participate each time a Polar Bear Club is called, please complete and sign the form and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I give permission for my child ____________________
in Room ____ to be part of the Polar Bear Club. On a cold day, if they are dressed warmly and choose to join, they may go outside for up to 15 minutes with a supervisor.
